Look out, ObamaCare’s individual mandate is coming!
Just kidding, that’s not what today’s article is about. In fact, as I discussed in this month’s Premium newsletter, if you actually read the ACA and the implementation regulations that came after it, there really is no big bonanza waiting for tax professionals on the individual side of the mandate.
In today’s article, I’m actually going to fill you in on some things that I’ll be doing in 2014. This includes things here at Tax Marketing HQ that can impact you and your tax practice (in good ways!).
First, let me fill you in on the changes I’m already implementing in my tax practice. I’m still going to be tax resolution-centric, but I’m now limiting myself to one active US tax resolution case at a time. I’m already there, and life is good. This was largely done to facilitate me finally going to Georgia in January.
Coming up will be my 7th tax prep season since my career change into taxation. It will also be the 4th tax season out of those 7 years that I will actually be sitting out the action. In the years I sit out tax season, I still end up doing somewhere around 30 tax returns, but this next season I had planned on doing zero. After a little bit of arm twisting, I’ve agreed to do two 1040’s, plus my own.
Instead, I’ll be in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, volunteering in some remote part of the country to teach English to children, and work on whatever local infrastructure projects I could put my old engineering skills to use on.
At the same time, I’ll be building connections with a unique subset of the expat community in Belgium. Some of these expats also exist in Georgia, but they’ll technically be serviced through my new Belgian office. Building a brand new boutique tax practice in Belgium serves a couple of purposes that are important to me, and I’ll get into those reasons later in the spring.
Here at Tax Marketing HQ, never fear — I’m not going away. These weekly articles will still be coming your way, including brand new tax season marketing materials.
Premium members will continue to receive the monthly Premium members newsletter, the live Q&A call, and other member resources. What you’re also going to start seeing in your mailbox every month, however, is a brand new feature: A monthly CD alternating between “hot seats” with tax professionals and interviews with marketing experts on various relevant topics. If you’re a Premium member and would like to be subjected to a “hot seat” — a one-hour consultation where we take action on a specific piece of your practice — please contact me and let me know what specific area of your practice you’d want help on. I’ll be reviewing these and contacting a few of you back to set up some hot seat call times.
At the very beginning of the year, my next book will be coming out. This will be The Tax Season Profitability Guide: 8 Big Ideas For A More Prosperous Tax Season. If you purchased the Black Friday promotion of the “Tax Season Success System”, you’ll be mailed a copy of this book as part of that order.
The final thing I’ll mention about 2014 is that, after many, many requests, I’ll finally be launching a coaching program. Platinum Inner Circle will officially kick off on July 1, 2014, and continue through the following tax season in 2015. Practitioners that enroll in this program during the “Early Bird” registration period will actually receive quite a bit of assistance from me during this coming tax season. The program won’t officially start until July, however, since I won’t be able to commit to a set schedule with you while I’m in Georgia.
This will be a fairly intensive mentoring program consisting of both group coaching sessions and private, one-on-one sessions with me. There will be a high level of accountability, and something will be going on nearly every week outside of holidays. The program will be by application only and require a 12-month commitment.
I will be making the program as affordable as I possibly can, including significant “Early Bird” discounts. I’m still tinkering with program structure specifics and pricing, but the program will definitely be LESS than $10,000 per year, even at full price without “Early Bird” registration. Look for more information on this program in the next few weeks, and if you’re even remotely interested in participating, please send me an email now indicating such so that I can start planning for participation levels.
I have to admit that I’m incredibly stoked about 2014. In fact, I don’t think I’ve been excited about a new year this much in a long, long time. The past three years that I’ve been in private practice have been incredible, and tax resolution as a profession has been very good to me for the six years I’ve been doing it now. For this, I am incredibly grateful.
But I think I’m even more grateful for the opportunity to give something back to the world, and that comes about in two ways. One, I get to work with some amazing CPAs, attorneys, and Enrolled Agents, and help them build a vision for their own futures, and help them put that vision into action. It’s amazing seeing that process happen with all of you.
Second, I get to go spend nearly half a year working with those less fortunate. Georgians have been through a lot, especially during the 70+ years of Soviet occupation, plus the brief war in 2008. Georgian hospitality is legendary in the region, and they’re making great strides towards rebuilding their country and creating a brighter future for their children — and I’m proud to get to go and be part of that.
Thanks for indulging me through this entire post as I talk about myself and what I’m doing. It’s a great time to be alive, and a fascinating time to be in the tax business. Here’s to making 2014 the best year ever!
