30-Day Tax Firm Marketing Challenge: Day 8

Three very quick challenges for you today. It should be super simple for you to take 5 minutes and squeeze one or more of these challenges into your day, even facing today’s extension deadline.


Online Marketing

Engage with people on Twitter.
Estimated Time: 5 minutes

I’ve never been a fan of Twitter. Even after 8 years, I still don’t get it. Never have, never will.

However, 300+ million other people do get it. So I play the Twitter game in a very minor, controlled manner. I use an automation tool to post my tweets, and then spend no more than 5 minutes, two or three times per week, engaging manually with other people. That’s it.

So I want to encourage you to do the same. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Post a tweet with a link back to an article on your own website, or a tax article of general interest elsewhere (IRS posts, Forbes posts, etc). That should take about 30 seconds. Then, do a search for specific hashtags and accounts, such as #taxes and @IRS, or hashtags related to your target market, such as #realestateinvestor. Reply to some tweets. Maybe answer a quick tax question somebody posted. Retweet a tax tip. Follow a few accounts you find. In other words, just be a human being, and interact a little bit.

When the timer goes off, stop. You’re done.


Offline Marketing

Make cold calls.
Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Very few people genuinely enjoy cold calling (telemarketing). Despite the fact I averaged about six hours per day doing exactly this when I first went into private practice, I definitely didn’t enjoy it. But I did what was necessary to make things happen.

If you offer any business services, such as 1120 or 1065 preparation, payroll, or bookkeeping, then this challenge is for you.

Flip open the phone book (do they still make those?) or visit SuperPages.com, YellowPages.com, or even Yelp.com, and pull up the local category page for your target market. E.g., go to the landscapers, homebuilders, real estate agents, body shops — whatever YOUR target market is.

Then set a timer for 5 minutes. Smile. Dial.

Don’t worry about your script. Don’t get twisted up over what to say. Just CALL. When somebody answers, ask to speak with the owner. Then just introduce yourself, and invite them to schedule an appointment with you to discuss their accounting and tax matters. That’s all you need to do. If you get voicemail, do the same thing.

Again… Don’t worry about a script. Just open your mouth and say whatever comes out. Well, don’t go all Donald Trump on people, but you know what I mean. 🙂

In 5 minutes, you should be able to get anywhere between one and five calls done, depending whether your get voicemail or reach the right person.


Practice Management

Walk your office interior and exterior.
Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Because of the fact that we spend a lot of time in our environments, we become numb to what our own space looks like. As such, most people rarely give any consideration to message their office communicates to clients.

So take a five minute walk around your own interior and exterior, and do so with a critical eye. Pretend like you’re walking into a medical office — that’s the mental comparison I think you should approach this with.

Does anything look shabby? Is there trash in the parking lot? Does your signage need some spiffing up? Are the windows cluttered or dirty? Does your lobby look inviting? Heck, is it simply clean? Consider things like visible trash cans, client files stacked up, dead plants, etc. Walk the entire office with this critical eye, and just take a few notes.

I’ve never met anybody that couldn’t list at least a few things that could use improvement. Perception is reality, and people will pass judgement regarding the quality of your services based on their perception of your physical office.
